I BUILT THIS BECAUSE I GOT PASSED OVER.
I was working at a Home Depot distribution center. Showed up, did the work, got good at it — good enough that when a lead position opened up, my supervisor told me I'd be great for it and put my name forward herself. The manager laughed out loud at her.
Later, in a one-on-one, that manager told me I "don't communicate with leadership enough." If you've ever worked a job like mine, you can translate that: I didn't kiss enough ass. My supervisor believed in me. My work spoke for itself. None of it mattered — because when someone else signs your check, someone else decides your ceiling.
I went on break after that meeting, pulled up Instagram, and saw a post about selling websites, domain names, and marketing. I'd taken an HTML class back in high school, so it wasn't completely foreign. Something clicked. That break room is where Key To Web started.
I studied every night, every break, every spare hour — domains, code, CMS platforms, SEO, link building. Six months later, I made my first sale. But I didn't stop there. I kept studying for years after: SEO, content marketing, design, the business side of the web. The first sale proved it was real. The years after made it a business.
Today, Key To Web is my full-time business. No manager. No ceiling.
